Huckleberry Mountain Trail #617

This trail provides nice views of Lost Lake at the 0.5 mile point. The trail passes through areas of heavy huckleberry ground cover and sections of old growth hemlock. This trail is most commonly used as access to the Pacific Crest Trail #2000 from Lost Lake. A horse camp is located in the vicinity.

This trail starts at the south end of Lost Lake at Lakeshore Trail #656 and heads south to the Pacific Crest Trail #2000 (PCT).  From Lakeshore Trail #656 (3,150’), the trail crosses a boardwalk and passes some campsites as it makes its way through the woods for 250 yards to a trail junction.  Bear right at the junction; the trail to the left goes only a few yards to Forest Road 630.  The trail climbs moderately to the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail #2000 (4,000’). Return on the Huckleberry Trail to Lost Lake or take the PCT to Lolo Pass or Indian Springs.

General Information

Directions:

From Hood River, OR travel south on Oregon Hwy 35 14 miles to Woodworth Road, approximately 0.3 mile south of milepost 89.  Turn right (west) on Woodworth Road and travel 2 miles to Dee Highway.  Turn right (northwest) on Dee Highway and travel approximately 3.6 miles to the Dee Mill site) Turn left, drive across bridge, stay left and follow signs to Lost Lake (Forest Road 13).  Follow Lost Lake Road to Lost Lake Campground (about 13 miles).  Turn left (south) on Forest Road 1340 and go south approximately 0.75 mile. Park near the Lost Lake Horse Camp and take the Old Growth Trail #657 0.1 mile to Lakeshore Trail #656. Travel approximately 250 feet south on Lakeshore Trail #656 to the beginning of the Huckleberry Mountain Trail #617. The trail heads left (south) at the junction.

This trail starts either at the south end of the lake on the Lakeshore Trail or from Sentinel Spur Road off of Jones Creek Road. It is a fairly steep 2.5 mile climb and connects to the Pacific Crest Trail.
