Tanner Cutoff Trail

This trail is within  Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness and begins at Tanner Butte Trail #401 (3,760’) and ends at Tanner Creek Trail #431 (1,200’).

To reach the east end of this trail from Historic Columbia River Highway Trailhead, from I-84 along the Columbia River take Bonneville exit #40. Turn south onto Forest Service Road 777 for 2.5 miles and find the small parking lot off the road.  Be sure to stay on the main road as there are several spur trails and roads.

Follow Tanner Butte Trail #401 (on the left) and travel 4 miles to the Tanner Cutoff Trail (#448). Turn right (west) onto this trail and travel downhill to Tanner Creek #431.  Visitors can return the same way or take Forest Road 8400-777 north 4.5 miles back to the Columbia River Trailhead.

Directions:

From Portland, OR - travel east on US Hwy 84 to Exit #40, signed for Bonneville Dam.  Follow signs to the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail (0.5 mile).  Park in the large parking lot (valid Recreation Pass required at trailhead, overnight parking permitted, but no camping).  

From Hood River, OR - travel west on US Hwy 84 to Exit #40. Follow signs to the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail (0.5 mile).  Park in the large parking lot (valid Recreation Pass required at trailhead, overnight parking permitted, but no camping).
