Umatilla Creek Trail #801

The trail lies on the north side of the steep Umatilla Creek Canyon as far as the creek crossing below the old Umatilla Mine. Timber along this lower 1.4 mile section is composed of grand fir, western larch, Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and Engelmann spruce. As the trail ascends to the ridge south of Umatilla Creek, it emerges from the young timber that extends to the main ridge where the trail intersects with Nipple Mountain Trial #800. Motorcyclists should use caution along this trail, particularly on the lower section which lies on the steep canyon walls of Umatilla Creek. One long day hike is possible starting at Orogrande and returning to Crooked River via Summit Flat and Fivemile Creek Trail #807. Trail #801 serves mainly for access to other trails in the area, and for overnight or loner backcountry trail trips. Since Nipple Mountain Trail #800 is closed to motorized vehicles yearlong, ATVs will have to use Umatilla Creek Trail on a return basis which is well within the scope of a day trip.
