Dixie Wagon Road Trail #222

From the trailhead on Moose Butte Road #1150, the Wagon Road trail crosses Moose Butte Creek and is gated there. The trail climbs for 2 miles to the ridge between Moose Butte Creek and West Fork of Red River. This section is steep with several switchbacks. From this ridge, the trail drops .75 miles into the Red River drainage and is intersected by Road #222 at a second gate. Here the trail joins Road #222 for more than 2.5 miles. It is very difficult to find where the trail leaves the road. Keep your eyes open for a large clearcut on the right (northwest) - the trail drops south of and below the road in this vicinity The next section of trail parallels the road in thick, cool stands of timber for a little more than one mile before it once again is intersected by Road #222 near Dixie Summit. The trail joins Road #222 for 700 feet to the junction with Road #1188, and then joins Road #1188 for 200 feet. The trail leaves the road heading south, crosses the headwaters of Crooked Creek, and parallels the creek for 3.5 miles to the trail's end on Road #222. The last 1.5 miles of the trail are on private land.
