Catfish Waterfowl Impoundment


The Catfish Waterfowl Impoundment is located in the Croatan National Forest and managed by North Carolina Wildlife commission and the USFS. It is approximately 800 acres in size on what was a drained farm before the USFS acquired it in the late 1960's. The average water level inside the impoundment is approximately 1-2 feet with canals approximately 5+ feet deep. Use caution when wading. Most hunters use small boats or canoes in the impoundment. Many species of song and wading birds can be seen, as well as ducks, alligators, otters, deer, and other wildlife.

Open Season: Open year round. However, the impoundment is gated annually.
Usage: Light
Restrictions: No motors on the impoundment, or motorized vehicles on the grounds. A federal duck stamp is required along with a NC hunting license and gamelands permit to hunt waterfowl on the impoundment. Non lead shot is required.

General Information


From US 70 east between New Bern and Havelock, turn right onto FS1100. There will be a White church at this turn. Road will be paved and then turns to gravel. Cross the 2nd bridge and turn at the next right on FS 158. The impoundment is on the right a few miles down. Park behind the gate but do not block it. From hwy 58 from Maysville, turn left onto FS1105. After county line, turn left onto FS158.
