Buck Lake Recreation Area

Buck Lake Group Camp provides primitive camping for groups of up to 50 people. Campers have access to Buck Lake to enjoy fishing and semi-private boating (limit 25 horsepower). Amenities are limited to one vault toilet, picnic tables and fire rings. There is access to hiking on the Florida Trail via a scenic trail that loops around the lake for 1.7 miles.

Permit Info: Freshwater fishing is governed by the regulations of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A valid Florida Freshwater Fishing License is required to fish in the Ocala National Forest.
  • Available for group reservations only.
  • All Ocala National Forest campgrounds allow pets, but they must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet and are not permitted in designated swimming and picnicking areas.
  • A maximum stay limit of 14 consecutive days is allowed in a 30 day period.

General Information


Buck Lake Group Camp is located west of SR 19 between Altoona and SR 40, north of CR 445. Access is via unimproved roads.

From Ocala: follow SR 40 east for 32 miles to the intersection with SR 19, past Juniper Springs Recreation Area. Turn right (south) and continue 4.6 miles. Look for the sign. Turn right on FR 535, which after 0.5 mile turns into FR 595C. Continue 0.9 mile to FR 595-2 and turn right. Continue 0.6 mile and turn left. Continue another 0.5 mile to the Group Camp.

General Notes:

Buck Lake also serves as a stopping point for backpackers along the Florida Trail (area is unavailable) who are looking for a water source between Alexander Springs and Farles Prairie. Water from the pump should be filtered. Backpackers may not stay here overnight.
