St. Johns River at Astor

Designated an American Heritage River, the St. Johns River begins in a large marshy area in Indian River County and flows north 310 miles before turning eastward at Jacksonville to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. This makes it the longest river in the state of Florida, as well as the longest river in the United States that generally flows north throughout its entire length.

Rentals & Guides: Boat rentals are available at the Salt Springs Marina. Salt Springs Run connects to the St. Johns River near the northern end of Lake George. Rentals are also available in Astor.

Fees No fees for most boat ramp use, except at Salt Springs Marina and private access points.
Permit Info: Fishing? You must have a valid Florida Freshwater Fishing License.
Restrictions: Please consult navigation charts regards the location of the boater exclusion zone (bombing range) in Lake George, the broadest section of the river. The regulations of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission for freshwater fishing and boating apply.
Closest Towns: Dockage is available at Astor, Georgetown, Welaka, and Palatka as well as Salt Springs Marina, up Salt Springs Run.

Although Lake George is called a lake, it is actually the widest spot in the St. Johns River, and is extremely shallow in places. Use of a navigational chart is a must when traversing Lake George.
