Ochoco Ranger House  Ochoco Ranger Rental House is located 25 miles northeast of Prineville, Oregon. Nestled under big ponderosa pines, the rental sits in upper Ochoco Valley at the location of the former Ochoco Ranger Station, which has now been removed. This scenic location offers easy access to Lookout Mountain Trail #804, Walton Lake, Big Summit Prairie and the heart of the scenic Ochoco National Forest.

This artfully constructed 1,145 square foot 2-story house has two large bedrooms and a half bath (with a flush toilet) upstairs, as well as another bedroom and a full bath (with a flush toilet and hot shower) downstairs. The house is furnished with two queen beds and three twin beds. The first floor, with warm wood paneling throughout, offers a well-equipped kitchen with cook stove and refrigerator, basic kitchenware and cleaning supplies. The large dining room, with a table and chairs, comfortably accommodates eight. Relax and enjoy a living room furnished with a couch, love seat and chair, end tables, accents lamps, and a ceiling fan. The house is fully electric and offers a 2-car garage. The fireplace is not in use.
A vacuum cleaner is provided for cleaning the carpeted flooring in the bedrooms. The roads will be plowed and open; however, visitors will be responsible for clearing the sidewalks and driveway during heavy snowfall periods (December through March).

Fees $90 per night.  Maximum capacity is 8 occupants.
Restrictions: This is a non-smoking facility. Pets and livestock are prohibited on these premises. RV's or camp trailers are not allowed at this site.  Discharging of firearms as well as fireworks are not allowed.  Garbage and cleaning services are unavailable so please pack out all garbage and leave the house and site cleaner than you found it.  Thank you for your cooperation.

General Information


From Prineville, Oregon:

Travel approximately 13 miles east on Highway 26.  

Turn right at the junction to Ochoco Ranger Station (County Road 123), and continue for approximately 7.5 miles.  

Turn left onto Forest Service Road 2610, which is just past the restrooms on your left.  

Drive past Ochoco Creek and then make an immediate left turn.  

The Ochoco Ranger Rental House will be the first structure on your right (the address is 33689 Ochoco Ranger Station Loop).  

Please park in the garage or driveway. 


This is not an ADA accessible facility.


There is a 2-car garage available on site.  Please park in the garage or driveway.  Up to four vehicles will fit in the space available; if more parking is needed there is a parking lot located across the residential road and next to Ochoco Creek.

    Please bring your own sleeping bag/bedding, flashlight or lantern with spare batteries, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, and dish soap.

    The nearest grocery store  is located in the town of  Prineville and is about 25 miles away.

    The combination to the rental will be in your confirmation letter. There will be a combination lock on the back door of the rental.

    Check out time is 12:00 noon. Check in time is 2:00 pm.
    When you leave you are responsible for cleaning the rental:

    ·  Clean bathrooms (toilets, showers/bath and sinks)

    ·  Sweep, mop or vacuum floors

    ·  Clean dishes, kitchen counter, stove and leave refrigerator clean and empty

    ·  Lock the doors behind you

    ·  Pack out all garbage

Cabin Rentals

This historic cabin is located centrally to allow for many recreational activities including: Hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, nature viewing, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and more.

For those interested in plants and wildlife: Big Summit Prairie is located to the east of the Ochoco Ranger Station and offers spectacular wildflowers in the spring and early summer. A representative cross-section of the flora can be seen including Wild Peony, Camas, White Wyethia, Peck's Mariposa Lily and Mountain Ladys-slipper.  The variety of wildflowers also attracts various bird and herd animals.

For those interested in exploring:  The 8 mile Lookout Mountain Trail #804 begins at Ochoco Ranger Station and climbs to the top of Lookout Mountain (6,900 feet elevation).

Nearby Walton Lake, a developed recreation site, is located about 7 miles northeast of Ochoco Ranger Station offers an easy hike around the lake that also connects with the more difficult 9.5 mile Round Mountain Trail

Winter enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Walton Sno-Park is located just past Walton Lake offers cross country ski trails and snowmobile routes (an Oregon State Sno-Park permit is required). 

In short, no matter what time of year you stay at the Ochoco Ranger Rental you are sure to get a relaxing escape as well as plenty of opportunities for adventure!
