Cougar Trail (#835)
This historic trail was designed as a reconstruction of a historic pack trail which was used from 1915 to 1922, and can now be accessed from both the Cougar East Trailhead and Cougar West Trailhead.
In the summer of 2014, the Bailey Butte fire burned through this area and much of the damage is still visible. Many charred trees are still standing and there are areas of significant erosion along the trail.
In the fall of 2014, the Forest Service spent several days completing log out of the trail and attempting to re-secure areas of erosion.
It is anticipated that trees will continue to fall the next several years and log-out work will be required regularly.
Please be aware when visiting this area as not all hazards can be mitigated.

Directions:To East Trailhead:
From Prineville, Oregon go east 27 miles on Highway 26 just past Ochoco Divide.
Turn left onto Forest Service Road 650.
To West Trailhead:
From Prineville, Oregon go east 25 miles on Highway 26.
Turn left onto Forest Service Road 27, and go 1 mile.
Take a right turn onto Forest Service Road 2730.
Go 6.5 miles, then take a right turn onto Forest Service Road 2735.
Proceed 1.5 miles to the trailhead.
