South Prong Trail (#821)

South Prong Trail #821 is accessed via the South Prong Trailhead.

This trail climbs a relatively gentle grade for approximately 3 miles as it contours through a mixed conifer and ponderosa pine forest.  The trail then meandors through high terrain to a fenceline just east of Crowbar Spring. From the fenceline, the trail begins a steep descent into Black Canyon, dropping 1,600 vertical feet in 2 miles through dense mixed conifer forest to join the Black Canyon Trail #820 at Big Ford.

This trail travels within Black Canyon Wilderness.

In the summer of 2002, the 747 Fire burned through much of the Black Canyon Wilderness. Some of the most intense burning occurred in the South Prong canyon, and will be apparent to visitors for some years to come. Stabilization and repair of fire and suppression damage to the trail is continuing. Be alert for loose footing, holes, and falling snags.
