Chatter Creek Trail #1580

Chatter Creek Trail is 5.5 miles long, gains 3800 feet of elevation, and is primarily used by hikers. Hiking permits are required and can be obtained at the trailhead. This trail within Alpine Lakes Wilderness is very steep, brushy, and rocky in places. The trail is not recommended for horse travel.  The trail begins at the Chatter Creek Trailhead, and climbs steeply and steadily up slopes that alternate between forested and rocky terrain. There are several obvious campsites along the trail for the first 3-4 miles, until the thick trees open up to a large bowl. Then the trail becomes steeper and rockier as it switchbacks up for the last 1.5-2 miles, offering wonderful views of the bowl and the valley below. At the top of the ridge, the terrain becomes more forested again, and the trail ends at Icicle Ridge Trail #1570.
