Mad River Trail #1409.1 (Upper)
This trail has a seasonal closure to horses, motorbikes and mountain bikes mid-October through mid-July.
October 22, 2022 -- Trail is now CLOSED to wheeled travel and pack and saddle stock until posted open, usually in mid July.
The upper Mad River Trail begins at Maverick Saddle and ends at the junction of Trail #1429 and Trail #1408. The upper Mad River has a seasonal closure in place. This trail is closed to stock, mountain bikes and motorcycles until posted. The trail will be posted open when the snow melts and the trail dries. This date varies from year to year. This trail offers access to the Mad Lake and Blue Creek areas, including four lakes and many high elevation meadows. The seasonal closure usually ends around mid-July, depending upon trail conditions. The area one-quarter mile on each side of the trail is closed to off trail travel by motorbikes and mountain bikes.

The annual seasonal closure is to protect natural resources, minimize damage to trails, and maintain quality trail systems. The seasonal closure protects trails from damage caused by wheeled and stock travel on muddy trails. When closed, the trails are open to hikers only. Trails are usually opened to wheeled and stock travel in mid July.
