This trail within Buckhorn Wilderness is heavily wooded the first few miles and opens up to meadows and spectacular mountain views.

Trail grade is 20% first 3 miles to within 0.5 mile of summit. Mt. Townsend is a long broad summit. The trail along the summit ranges from flat up to 8% grades.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: 5/5/2018: Visitor reports that upper Trailhead is snow free. The first portion of the trail to the last northern switchback is in great condition and is clear of snow. The summit ridge is almost entirely snow free, but when the sun did peak through the clouds it was very bright (sunglasses were essential). I followed the trail back down. From ~6000' down to ~4500' the trail is covered with anywhere from 12" to 4' of compact snow. The current boot path veers off the actual trail in many locations and is very, very steep (it bypasses Camp Windy altogether). Traction (spikes) and poles would be handy.
