Royal Creek Trail #832


Royal Creek cascading over rocks.

This short 0.5 mile trail along Royal Creek starts 1 mile up the Upper Dungeness Trail, within Buckhorn Wilderness, and leads into Olympic National Park to access the Royal Basin area. Continue on the trail into the park ascending gradually at first with some steep sections before arriving at Royal Basin (6.0 miles) in the Park. Royal Basin is in the Olympic National Park and is surrounded on three sides by rugged rock ridges. Water is available along route.  Permits required to stay overnight in Olympic National Park.

Permit Info: Obtain a Olympic National Park Backcountry permit at a Park Service office before camping overnight within the Park.
Open Season: Early Summer
Restrictions: Wilderness regulations apply
  • Pets and firearms are prohibited in Olympic National Park.
  • Use existing campsites when possible and camp at least 100 feet from water sources.
Closest Towns: Sequim, WA
Water: Treat all water before drinking.
Passes: A valid Recreation Pass is required for day use at Dungeness Upper Trailhead.
