The Gold Lake 4x4 Campground is located in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area. Located nine miles southwest of Graeagle, California, this recreation area has special geological features. There is breathtaking scenery and over 20 small lakes nearby, most of which are accessible by hiking trails. This area provides a multitude of recreational activities including camping, fishing, boating, hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, backpacking, swimming, windsurfing and nature study. In the winter visitors can snowmobile, cross-couintry ski and snowshoe. This 4x4 campground is located along the shores of Gold Lake at an elevation of 6400 feet. This campground has 16 sites with tables, food lockers and fire rings. There is no water or garbage service available. The pit toilets have been decommissioned and removed. Campers are required to pack out all solid human waste.

Current Conditions: The pit toilets of design similar to those at this 4X4 campgroundĀ are unsanitary and must be removed as soon as possible by order of the Environmental Protection Agency. Campground users must pack out all solid human waste in order to acheive sanitary conditions. The decision to keep the campground open was largely based upon the fact that campground users have a proven record of keeping the area clean and have become stewards of the area. We all know what a great place this campground is. The Gold Lake 4X4 campground will remain open as long as monitoring indicates that sanitary conditons are kept up. To accomplish this, campground users must pack out all solid human waste. 'Wag Bag' systems are available at many popular sporting goods retailers.

General Information



Take Highway 89 southeast from Graeagle, California a couple miles.  Proceed south on Gold Lake Highway for 10 miles to Gold Lake.  Take the Gold Lake 4X4 road to campground. 4-wheel drive required.
