Elbert Creek Campground

NOTICE: As of June 15, 2020, the water system at this campground is closed until further notice pending repairs. More information regarding this closure is posted at the entrance to the campground in accordance with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Please ensure you bring enough water to serve your needs for the duration of your trip.

Located off the Halfmoon Road (FSR 110), Elbert Creek is a first-come, first-served campground adjacent to the Mount Elbert and Mount Massive Trailheads at 10,000 feet. This is a very popular campground for hikers. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable water.

High altitude sickness may occur at this altitude.

During the 2020 season, water will be temporarily unavailable at this campground. Please bring water for your camp, including enough water to completely drown your fire, leaving it cold to the touch, if you are having a campfire.

Fees
$15.00 fee per site for overnight camping. Two (2) vehicles or one (1) RV per site is included in the camping fee. $6.00 for a third vehicle. 
 
$7.00 fee for day use if not camping overnight.
 
Fees are payable by cash, check, or money order. Self-servicing fee tube is available.
 
First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the FIRST NIGHT.
 
Golden Age and Golden Access Cardholder: 50% discount off the camping fee only.

Restrictions: The following restrictions apply to this campground:
  • Maximum 8 persons per site: 2 tents and 2 vehicles or 1 recreation vehicle.
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times.
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks.
  • Only licensed vehicles can operate inside campground.
  • Camping is NOT ALLOWED behind a LOCKED GATE.
  • No camping within 100 feet of the Creek.
  • Off highway vehicles (OHVs) must stay on designated roads and trails.
Closest Towns: Leadville, CO
Water: Potable water is available from a handpump.
Restroom: Vault toilets are available in the campground.
Passes:

The Interagency Senior Pass (previously known as the Golden Age Pass) and the Interagency Access Pass qualifies for a 50% discount at concessionaire run campsites. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.

General Information

Directions:

From Leadvile, travel south approximately 3 miles on US Hwy 24. Turn RIGHT on Colorado 300 at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery sign. Continue about 3/4 of a mile and turn LEFT at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn RIGHT at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road will lead to the Halfmoon East/West and Elbert Creek areas. (Note: This road is not maintained in the winter.)
