Halfmoon East Campground


Area Status: Temporarily Closed

Halfmoon East is a first-come, first-served campground, with 5 sites located off the Halfmoon Road (FSR 110) near the Mount Elbert and Mount Massive Trailheads at 9,900 feet. This is a very popular campground for hikers. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings with grates, and vault toilets.

High altitude sickness may occur at this altitude.

Reservations: No sites are reservable. This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site.

Fees:
  • $22 nightly fee per site for overnight camping which includes two vehicles. A third vehicle is an additional $8 per night. RVs and ATV/boat trailers count as one vehicle.
  • Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. Self-servicing fee tube is available.
  • First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the first night.

Restrictions:
  • Maximum of eight people per site
  • Maximum three tents per site or one RV and two tents
  • Dogs, including service dogs, must be leashed at all times
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks
  • Only licensed vehicles can operate inside campground
  • Remember to check fishing regulations before fishing at any body of water. For stocking reports and more information on regulations or fishing licenses, check out the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website.

Passes: America the Beautiful Senior or Access Pass cardholders may receive a 50% discount off the camping fee only. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.

General Information

Directions:

From Leadville, travel south approximately 3 miles on US Hwy 24. Turn RIGHT on Colorado 300 at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery sign. Continue about 3/4 of a mile and turn LEFT at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn RIGHT at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road will lead to the Halfmoon East/West and Elbert Creek areas. (Note:  This road is not maintained in the winter.)
