The Angel of Shavano trailhead serves as major trailhead along the Colorado Trail (#1776) which stretches from Denver to Durango, Colorado. The trailhead is located about 9 miles west of Salida.

Directions:

From the junction of Highway 50 and 285, just outside of Poncha Springs, Co, travel west on Highway 50 for 6 miles to the town of Maysville. Turn right onto County Road 240 and travel northwest for 3 miles to the trailhead. You will pass the entrance for the Angel of Shavano Group area on the left and the trailhead is located on the right side of the road.


General Notes:

Northern route:The trail climbs steadily for about .5 miles and levels off at the ridge overlooking the North Fork drainage. The trail continues north and travels through aspen groves and meadows to the Blanks Cabin trailhead. (A parking area, toilet and information board are available at this trailhead.) Continuing north on the Colorado Trail will take you to the intersection with the Mt. Shavano trail which ascends to the peak.

Southern route: The trail continues at the Angel of Shavano campground, crossing a foot bridge at the creek and winds up a ridge then descends past Dry Lake and Lost Creek to Highway 50.


Parking:

The trailhead can accomodate up to 6 vehicles. Parking is limited but during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, the parking area can accomodate small horse trailers.
