Coaldale Campground is located on the banks of Hayden Creek and is a small, quiet campground . Most of the campsites are walk-in sites with small parking areas. The area is thick with gamble oak, juniper, and cottonwood trees.

General Information

Directions:

To get to this campground from Salida, travel 15 miles on Highway 50 east toward Canon City. Just outside of Coaldale, watch for signs indicating access to "Cutty's Resort" and Hayden Creek. Turn right at the signs and get on Fremont County Road 6. County Road 6 travels south, winding up towards Hayden Pass. Cutty's Resort (private) is located on the left and about .25 miles past the resort is Coaldale campground.


General Notes:

This campground is located in "Bear Country" and campers should be mindful that any food, drink or edible items will attract bears. Campers must dispose of all trash at nearby Hayden Creek campground which is located 1 mile south of the campground. Coolers must be put away and locked in a hard-sided vehicle.

Most of the parking sites are not suitable for large RVs.

Fishing is available in Hayden Creek.

Day Hiking

The nearby Rainbow Trail (#1336) is located just off County Road 6 between Coaldale campground and Hayden Creek campground. Watch for a small Forest Service sign located on the right side of the road. The Rainbow Trail is 100 miles in length and travels along the edge of the Sangre de Cristo wilderness area. OHV Road Riding

Hayden Pass is located near the entrance to Hayden Creek campground. From Coaldale campground, travel southwest on County Road 6 for one mile. The Hayden Pass road is located on the left side of the road, just before the entrance station for Hayden Creek campground. Hayden Pass is extremely rocky and high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles and ATV's are required. The pass should not be attempted by inexperience drivers.

OHV Trail Riding

The Rainbow Trail (#1336) is located between Coaldale and Hayden Creek campgrounds. The trail is located on the right side of the road.

Motorcycles are permitted on this single-track trail. ATV's and four-wheel drive vehicles are prohibited due to trail width restrictions. The Rainbow Trail travels east and west from the trailhead and skirts the edge of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness area.
