Alvarado Campground

Area Status: Closed

Alvarado Campground offers reservable, equestrian, and first-come, first-served sites. Nearby trails including Cottonwood Trail #1344, Comanche Trail #1345, Goodwin Trail #1346 and Venable Trail #1347, access the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness from the Rainbow Trail #1336.

The Rainbow Trail #1336 is a motorized trail open to ATV and motorcycle use and runs along the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. Trails that lead into Wilderness areas are open to non-motorized/non-mechanize use only and Wilderness regulations apply

Dates are weather dependent. All services may not be available early or late in the season.

Reservations: Call 1-877-444-6777 or visit www.recreation.gov at least 4 days in advance. Friday and Saturday night minimum required stay on weekends. 3 nights minimum on holiday weekends. Walk-ups are exempt from the nightly minimum.
Area Amenities: Camping trailer: 9 RV Sites, 4 Horse Sites
Fees: $30.00 per site fee for overnight camping. Two vehicles per site. Additional $10.00 fee for extra vehicles. $10.00 day-use fees charged if not registered in campgrounds. Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. Self-servicing fee tube is available. First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the first night. Senior and Access cardholders: 50% discount off the camping fee and day-use fee. Season passes sold by camp hosts are honored for free day-use access. Equestrian sites are available at $27.00 per site.

  • Maximum 8 persons per site: 2 tents and 2 vehicles or 1 recreation vehicle.
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times.
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks.
  • Only licensed vehicles can operate inside campground.
  • Camping is not allowed behind a locked gate.

Activities

Campground Camping

Fifty campsites; nine are RV accessible with a spur length of no more that 29 feet, and three are horse sites. Water from a hand pump, accessible toilets and trash receptacles are located in the campground. Each campsite has a fire grate/grill and a picnic table. Firewood is available for sale by the concessionaire at the campground. 
Horse Sites: The three horse sites have more space (no corrals) and are away from the other campsites. You must bring only certified weed free hay, or certified weed free cubes, or pellets.
