Penitente Canyon Campground
Penitente Canyon, a Bureau of Land Management Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) is an internationally recognized climbing area, offering more than 300 incredible sport climbing routes. South-facing routes can be climbed year-round within the SRMA. Numerous Trails are also available for your enjoyment within Penitente Canyon SRMA. Brochure & map. General Information
Directions:From Highway 285 turn west on County Road G, travel about 6 miles to La Garita follow County Road 38A until you see the Penitente Canyon turn off on your right, less than a mile.
From Del Norte travel northwest on Highway 112 to road 38A turn north, stay on 38 A until you see signs for Penitente Canyon, about 8 miles.

RULES OF THE TRAIL Please remember to:
STAY ON THE TRAIL - Improper bike riding techniques can harm trails and diminish trail experiences for others. Stay on existing trails; don't create new ones or cut switchbacks. Respect all route closures and "No Trespassing" signs.Limit your riding to durable surfaces (trails, dirt roads, pavement and campgrounds).
CONTROL YOUR BICYCLE - In attention for even a moment could put you and others at risk. Obey speed regulations and recommendations and ride with in your limits.
SHARE THE TRAIL - Let your fellow trail users know you are coming - a friendly greeting is one method.. Anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to all other trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed differently.

Viewing Wildlife
Watch out for rattlesnakes!! Prairie rattlesnakes are common in this area. Please be on the lookout for them. Always watch where you are stepping or reaching - don't reach where you can't see. If you encounter a snake, leave it alone and simply back away. Parents should always keep a close eye on their children in snake country.
