  • “Campers and hikers staying at Big Meadows between September 7 and 11, 2018 can expect loud noises between 9 am and 6 pm due to a blasting project in the Spruce Lakes area, approximately 5 miles southwest of the campground”.

The Archuleta trail is 7.0 miles long. It begins at Forest Road 430.3c at Big Meadows Boat Ramp Parking Lot and ends at CDNST #813/Archuleta Lake.

This trail is one of the main access points into the Weminuche Wilderness. It is also used extensively by fishermen along Big Meadows Reservoir. It is a fairly easy trail on the lower end, but elevation and steepness combine to make it moderately difficult on the upper end.

The trail leaves from the Big Meadows boat launching area. Travels approximately 7 Miles (11 kilometers) along Archuleta Creek and the South Fork of the Rio Grande River, and joins the Continental Divide Trail at Archuleta Lake. It is a gentle trail and quite scenic along the lower end as it follows the South Fork of the Rio Grande River. The trail then climbs much more steeply. Much of the trail along this upper portion passes through Spruce and Fir stands and the views are intermittent until Archuleta Lake is reached. This trail is heavily used by hikers and horse riders.

This Weminuche Wilderness access trail is open for the following uses: Day Hiking, Backpacking, Horseback Riding. Wilderness Access is foot or horse travel only. Trail leads to Archuleta Lake and Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.
