The South Crestone Lake Trail is 4.5 miles long. It begins at Forest Road 949 and ends at South Crestone Lake. This trail offers the opportunity for a long day trip or a pleasant overnight trip. Numerous good scenic views of the lower canyon are offered as the trail ascends through stands of aspen and fir, and breaks through timberline below the lake. The trail is well marked and maintained. Favorite attractions are fishing in the creek and lake, rugged scenery, and the chance to see bighorn sheep in the canyon. There are several good campsites along the route.
The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking, Horseback Riding, Fishing, Viewing Wildlife, and Dispersed Camping

Directions:
Take Hwy 17 to Moffat. Turn east on the Crestone Road (CR T) and follow it to Crestone. Continue past first stop sign. At the second stop sign, turn right onto Galena. Follow the gravel road 1.5 miles. 2 WD vehicles can park here. 4 WD vehicles can continue another .75 miles up the road to the trailhead. South Crestone Lake Trail #860 is straight ahead. Willow Lake Trail #865 veers to the right and crosses the creek.
