Pupps Camp Way Trail #1174

Trail winds through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, with good views of the Collier Creek and Illinois Wild and Scenic River drainages. It is steep and rocky with few established campsites until you reach the Collier Bar flat on the Illinois Wild and Scenic River. Crossing the Illinois Wild and Scenic River can be dangerous, and visitors should use extreme caution. Best time for crossing is July-September.

Only water is from a small drainage the trail crosses below the junction with the Horse Sign Butte Way Trail #1175 at what is know as "Burt Camp."

This trail begins at Game Lake and ends at Collier Bar of the Illinois Wild and Scenic River. The continuation of the trail on the east side of the river, which joins the Illinois River Trail on the Wild Rivers Ranger Disctrict is presently NOT recommended due to its poor condition (hard to find, numerous downed trees and heavy brush).

This trail is located in the Biscuit Fire area that burned in the year 2002. Although Forest Service trail crews have been repairing and maintaining many of the affected trails since the Biscuit Fire, visitors should take into consideration (because of the substantially increased risk of fire-killed snags falling) that travel and camping may be more difficult and require greater concern for safety.
