Frances Shrader Old Growth Trail #1172

This short hike is one of the best opportunities to see an old-growth forest close to the coast, providing botanical observation, interpretive opportunities, solitude, and wildflower viewing opportunities.

Dedicated to Frances Shrader, longtime employee of the Forest Service, this interpretive trail is an excellent outdoor learning experience. Some of the Northwest's largest hardwoods and stately old-growth Douglas-fir trees are found on this loop trail! The coniferous forest here is dense, lush and green. Several of the old trees show fire scars from flames which burned the area many years ago, but the trees' thick bark protected them from serious harm. The trail has a gentle slope suitable for all ages, with two benches and two picnic tables tucked along its length.
