West Mancos (621)

West Mancos Trail (621) is accessed by either Box Canyon Trail (617) or, the more popular access point, the Transfer Trail (192).

From Box Canyon Trailhead, the route drops approximately 0.7 miles to the interestion of West Mancos Trail at the bottom of the Box Canyon.

Most people, however, access the West Mancos Trail via the Transfer Trail (192), which is located adjacent to the Big Al Trail in the Transfer Recreation Area. Transfer Trail (192) drops approximately 0.25 miles immediately into the West Mancos Canyon via several switchbacks. Due to the steep nature of the upper portion of this trail, it can be very tricky and even more so in wet conditions. Be especially careful if you are on horseback. The Transfer Trail ends at the junction with the West Mancos Trail. If you go downstream (to the right) it will take you back to the Box Canyon Trailhead via the Box Canyon Trail. If you head upstream (to the left), the trail will eventually take you all the way to the Sharkstooth trailhead passing the Golconda Trail (173), the Owens Basin Trail (746) and the North Fork Trail (169) along the way.  Portions of this trail can be extremely rocky from a steady supply of talus.

Please note, West Mancos Trail is a multi-use trail with restrictions for motorized uses from the trailhead to the intersection with the Golconda Trail and from the intersection of the North Fork Trail to its terminus at the Sharkstooth Trailhead.  Please review the Dolores Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for specific information. They are available at the Dolores Public Lands Office at 29211 Highway 184, Dolores, CO, or on MVUM Webpage
