Baumgartner Campground is a group, fee, reservation campground composed of 39 camping units on the South Fork of the Boise River.  It is one of two campgrounds on the District that has a campground host.  There are 6 double family units, for up to 16 people each, and 1 multi-family group unit that can be reserved for up to 32 campers.  Swimming, fishing, and picnicking are popular activities. An extensive trail system for OHV and motorcycles can be accessed from this campground, however OHVs are not allowed on the roads within the campground.  An interpretive nature trail offers history on the geologic attractions in the area. The Hot Pool, located within the campground is a toasty 111 degrees Fahrenheit and is open daily from dawn until dusk. The pool is drained nightly. Soaps, alcohol and glass are not allowed near or in the pool. Swimsuits are required and no pets are allowed around or in the pool.

Operational Hours: Standard operating times are May - September, and can be seasonally contingent. The campground is currently open for the 2021 season.
Reservations: Reservations are available through
Fees $10.00 per night fee for a single unit, $20.00 per night fee for a double unit, and $40.00 per night fee for the group site.

Restrictions: Pets must be leashed at all times in the campground.  All camp fires must be attended.  OHVs are not allowed on the roads within the campground.  The pool is drained and cleaned at night and no soaps, alcohol or glass are allowed near or in the pool. Swimsuits are required and no pets are allowed around or in the pool.

OHV Trail Riding

The Iron Mountain Trail (#050) is 9.3 miles in length. The trailhead is one mile west of Baumgartner Campground. Originally, the trail was a road providing access to Iron Mountain Lookout. Motorized travel is heavy, but is restricted to vehicles with 48" (or less) wheel base. The highlight of the trail is the scenic view from the Forest Service Lookout on Iron Mountain.
