Cherry Lake Cherry Lake

Fish and boat on the largest lake on the Forest. Open all year, road access subject to winter closure. Cherry Lake visitors enjoy camping, boating, swimming, fishing and hiking. Recreation facilities include a boat launch and vault restrooms. There are no cell, fuel, grocery, or water services at Cherry Lake. Visitors are advised to plan accordingly.

California Campfire Permit is required to have fire in a dispersed campsite. Campfire permits can be obtained for free at any Forest Service office or online at https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/.

General Information

Directions:

Travel from Groveland, California: Travel east from Groveland, California about 13.8 miles. Turn left on Cherry Lake Road. Continue on Cherry Lake Road for approximately 23.5 miles to Cottonwood Road (Forest Road 1N04). Turn left and travel approximately a half mile north.  You will see the Cherry Valley Campground sign, then turn right towards the campground.

Travel from Tuolumne, California:  Take Buchanan Road, which turns into Cottonwood Road (Forest Road 1N04). Travel approximately 30 miles to the Cherry Valley Campground sign, then turn left into the campground.

NOTE: The Tuolumne route is advisable for visitors in RVs and or towing equipment. Cherry Lake Road is narrow and steep and not advised for RVs or trailers.

Activities

Campground Camping

Recreation areas with activity Campground Camping:

There is camping available at the Cherry Valley Campground. Reservations are available online at recreation.gov

Dispersed Camping

Recreation areas with activity Dispersed Camping:

Dispersed camping is available around the lake at least 100 feet from the high-water mark.

Boating - Motorized

Boat Launch and Motorized Boating is closed at this time due to Dam Valve Replacement Project. Cherry Lake boaters must follow California Department of Boating and Waterways regulations: http://www.dbw.ca.gov when open.

Swimming

Available at Cherry Lake located next to the campground. Swimming near the boat ramp is not recommended. 

Waterskiing
