Current Conditions: Summit Ranger District (HWY 108) 11/8/2024: Herring Creek is now open. Stanislaus National Forest Order No. STF-16-2024-11, dated October 11, 2024, is hereby terminated.
Reservations: No reservation is required to use this trailhead. The trail leads directly into a Wilderness Area where a FREE wilderness permit is REQUIRED anytime a person or group travels OVERNIGHT. For overnight wilderness trips on the Stanislaus (into the Emigrant, Carson-Iceberg, or Mokelumne Wilderness), visitors must obtain a permit from the Summit Ranger Station (in person during office hours or self issue after hours).

  • Interpretive Site: Information board is at trailhead.
  • Parking: Parking is on native dirt surface. Do not block gate at trailhead.
Fees: No fee for a Wilderness Permit
Permit Info: A Wilderness permit is required for overnight camping within the Wilderness.
