Sourgrass Recreation Area

Area Status: Open

Campground, picnic area, Jeep trail and whitewater boating put-in on the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. Campground name is Wakalu Hep Yo.

Current Conditions: Calaveras Ranger District (HWY 4)
Fees: The Forest Service operates the Sourgrass Recreation Area and charges the following fees: Campsite fee prices, 2024 & 2025 $30 per night and fee raises to $35 per night in 2026.   Sourgrass Day Use fee is $5 per group per vehicle.  The America the Beautiful, Interagency Senior and Access Passes are honored and receive 50% off the nightly rate. Only applicable to the single site the pass holder occupies.  Pass number must be written on fee envelope.  The Interagency Annual, Senior, Military, 4th Grade and Volunteer passes do provide free day at the Sourgrass Day Use Area.  No dispersed camping within the Recreation Area.

Best Season: Summer
Busiest Season: Holiday weekends
Restrictions: The river can be treacherous.  Please be aware that the current is swift and water levels can fluctuate.  Swimming is not recommended.
Closest Towns: Emergency medical services available at the Arnold Medical Clinic in the Meadowmont Shopping Center in Arnold, or at Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas (Highway 49). Gas, groceries, camping supplies are available in Arnold and Camp Connell.
Water: Potable water when campground is open, usually late spring to fall.
Restroom: Vault toilets; one flush toilet restroom with showers in campground.
Passes: America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes and Golden Age and Golden Access passes accepted, reduces camping fee to half-price per night.
