Britton Peak Trailhead
Notice-As of November 2023, the Jackpot and High Climber trails at Britton Peak are closed until spring. Thank you for your cooperation.
The trail to Britton Peak is possibly the shortest trail to a Sawtooth Mountain overlook on the Forest. It is a quick, though steep, quarter mile hike with a nice scenic view from the top. It is a short deadend branch off the northbound Superior Hiking Trail. The Superior Hiking Trail southbound from the Britton Peak Trailhead includes the deadend Carlton Peak Trail to the summit of Carlton Peak.
This is also the starting point for the Britton Peak singletrack mountain biking trails in the summer, and the Sugarbush crosscountry ski trail system in the winter.
Be aware when either biking or hiking that the mountain bike trails may be used by both bikers and hikers. Hikers should step off the trail and yield to bikers when they meet. Click here for a map of the mountain bike trail system.
Activities
Mountain Biking
Britton Peak singletrack mountain bike trails start from the same trailhead as the hiking trail to Britton Peak overlook, the Superior Hiking Trail, and the Sugarbush Ski Trails, but are separate from these trails. Bicyclists should make sure they are using the correct trail system.
A georeferenced pdf map of the Britton Peak Mountain Bike Trails is availble for download. Use it as a map with any pdf reader on your phone, or use it with a geolocator app such as Avenza to see exactly where you are. Digital maps should not be your primary reference as batteries can run out.
There are three loops with 5.5 miles of singletrack bike trail in total. In addition to these loops is the much longer Jackpot Trail which will take you to the Onion River Road (Oberg Mountain area) and connects to the High Climber Trail which goes on to the Lutsen Ski Hill Road.
Also starting from this trailhead are the Sugarbush XC ski trails. In most areas, the bike trail is separate from the ski trail. The ski trail surface is not adequate to withstand the impact of bicycle use, so please do not bike on ski trails.
