Crane Lake


Crane Lake is a large body of water and is a popular area for fishing and boating. There are 3 backcountry campsites located on the lake. Crane Lake also connects to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness through Little Vermilion Lake and Voyageurs National Park through Sand Point Lake.

General Information



Crane Lake is located 27 miles northeast of Orr, MN.

  • From Orr, take County Highway 23 to Buyck.

  • At Buyck, County 23 turns into County 24. Continue on 24 to the community of Crane Lake.


Free overnight parking is available in the public boat launch located near Handberg's Marine.

Dispersed Camping

There are 3 backcountry campsites on Crane Lake.

Please use facilities provided such as fire rings, tent pads, and latrines. Pack out garbage. 

Fees: None required.
Reservation info: First come, first served. 
Permit: Permits are not required at campsites on Crane Lake. Permits are required year-round when entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, including Little Vermilion Lake north of Crane Lake. Free self-issue permits can be used.
