Carlton Peak Trail

  

Carlton Peak Trail is a 2 mile hike with wonderful views of Lake Superior.  This hike is gradual at first then steep as you get to the top, take care with children around the steep cliffs.

Accessibility:

Easy access from the Britton Peak trailhead.  You can also access the trial from the Temperance River State Park and follow th eCouldron Trail to the Superior Hiking Trail, which takes you to Carlton Peak.


Directions:

From Highway 61 noth of Tofte take Cook County Road 2 (The Sawbill Trail only goes one direction.) for about 2 miles.  Look for the Britton Peak Trail head parking lot.  You follow the Superior Hiking Trail to the west, back across the Sawbill Trail.

Rockhounding

Carlton Peak is a large piece of anorthrocite believed to be broken off then floated up from deep in the earth during a period of vulcanism 1.1 billion years ago.  Anorthrocite from Carlton Peak was used to face the lower portion of the ranger station at Tofte.
