Vermilion Falls

The Vermilion Falls Trail is a 1/4 mile round trip hike. Walking from the village of Crane Lake go north past the Voyageurs National Park office,  where the road Y's stay left, then turn left again into a parking area.  The trail starts on the northwest corner of the clearing. The trail and the observation deck overlooking the falls are accessible. Vermilion Falls is a cascading torrent of water forced through a 10-foot wide opening in the granite. There are 3 picnic tables along the trail with beautiful views of the falls. It is a popular day use destination on the west side of the forest. For your safety, keep small children in hand when walking in the falls area.

Directions:

Vermilion Falls is located 27 miles northeast of Orr, MN. 

  • From Orr, take St. Louis County 23 to Buyck (16 miles). 
  • At Buyck, County 23 turns into County 24. Continue on County 24 for 5 1/2 miles to Forest Road 491.
  • Turn left for 5 1/2 miles to the Vermilion Falls Recreation Area access road.
