The Deer Yard Ski Trails offer some beautiful skiing along the ridge at the edge of Lake Superior.  They connect with the North Shore Mountains Ski Trail System and the ski trails at Cascade River State Park.  Be prepared though - one stretch of trail is named 'The Long Climb'.  The plus is that there is long wonderful downhill run on the way home!

Deer Yard Ski Trails (named for Deer Yard Lake) are accessed from the north from a parking lot off FR 332.  FR 332 turns off County 45 (Pike Lake Road).  They can also be accessed from the south from Cascade Lodge.  Cascade Lodge charges a small parking fee for using their lot.

XC Skiing/Snowshoeing

Deer Yard Ski Trails are groomed for classic cross country skiing.  While most of the system is intermediate in difficulty, there are some expert trails as well.  Be prepared for long up and down sections, and great views, especially from the old Cascade Fire Tower site.
