Magnetic Rock Trail

Magnetic Rock trail is a 3 mile easy hike.  Magnetic rock is a 60-foot rock with strong magnetic attraction.  Bring your compass and test the magnetism.  You will see past disturbances: 1999 blowdown, 2002 prescribed burn, and 2007 Ham Lake wildfire.   The trail connects with the Gunflint Lake trails.  Use a map for hiking past Magnetic Lake.

The 60 foot magnetic rock is an example of the large amount of iron bearing rock in the area.  The Paulsen Mine area on the nearby Centennial Trail was an effort to mine this iron ore at the turn of the century.
