Day Hiking

The Auk Nu Trail is 2.6 miles long. It begins at Spaulding Trail Mi. .8 and ends at John Muir Recreation Cabin. The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking, XC Skiing/Snowshoeing
Difficulty Level: Moderate

Backpacking

The John Muir Cabin is at the end of this trail. The cabin can be reserved for two nights in a row. Pack in your gear and spend a night or two. In the winter, it's possible to ski in with an overnight pack, stay a night at John Muir Cabin, then ski across the meadows to Peterson Lake Cabin. Ski out on the Peterson Lake Trail the next day. Plan on leaving a vehicle at both trailheads as they are about 11 miles apart along the road.

Viewing Wildlife

Look for deer along the way. Song birds can be seen also.

Viewing Plants

The trail goes through forest and meadows, providing a wide variety of plant life. Flowers are in bloom in June and July.

Viewing Scenery

Near the cabin the view is open enough to see south toward Juneau and north toward Lynn Canal.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate

XC Skiing/Snowshoeing

This trail is steep in some areas. Many people hike up carrying their skis and then ski at the top of the meadows. Hiking skins attached to skis can aid the uphill skiing. Back country skis are recommended. The skis should provide some control in minor downhill conditions and floatation in powder snow.
