Lake Kathleen

This is a small dark A-frame cabin, within Native selected lands, with sleeping space for 4 to 5 people. The cabin sits on level ground 200' (61 m) from the beach within a small parcel of timber. Much of the surrounding area is private land and has been has been clearcut. The area around the cabin shows a patchwork pattern of logged and unlogged areas. Facilities: 2 single wooden bunks, Sleeping loft, Broom, Cooking counter and shelves, Oil stove (takes #1 fuel oil, NOT provided),Outhouse, Table and benches, Skiff with oars. Water is available from the lake. Treat all water before using. The cabin has an oil stove for heat. Bring your own #1 fuel oil, personal flotation devices, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, and fire starter. Please follow the oil stove directions carefully. Cabin users may also choose to bring a small outboard motor (less than 10 horsepower due to wilderness regulations). You are in brown bear country. The area surrounding the cabin has been clearcut fairly recently. An active road system encompasses the lake. You are surrounded by Shee Atika Corporation lands and a permit is necessary to hike from the cabin. General Information

Directions: Located on the west side of Admiralty Island and east end of the lake. Access is by float plane. It is about a 30-minute flight from Juneau. Suggested USGS topo maps: Sitka D-2, D-3

Cabin Rentals

Occupancy of Forest Service cabins is by permit only. Reservations may be made up to 180 days in advance by calling 1-877-444-6777 (518-885-3639 overseas) or via internet at www.recreation.gov. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30.

Lake and Pond Fishing

Lake Kathleen is usually ice free by early May through mid November for fishing. Shallow along edges of lake.

Species Grouse, Canada geese, scoters, long-tailed duck, Barrow's goldeneye, harlequin, and buffleheads along with mallards, scaups, and mergansers.

Viewing Wildlife

Although the valley this cabin sits in has been logged, healthy wildlife populations provide wildlife viewing along the lake shoreline and logging roads. You are surrounded by Shee Atika Corporation lands and a permit is necessary to hike from the cabin.
Species Brown bear, Sitka blacktail deer, numerous bird species, mink, marten, river otter, beaver, red squirrel, western toad, rough skinned newt are among the list of creatures inhabiting the area.

Swimming

Lake Kathleen is ice covered for five months, snowmelt and cold rain keeps it full during the spring and summer so the water temperature is never considered warm. Late July through August the surface water near the shoreline can warm enough that on a sunny afternoon a swim is possible.
