Valentine Ridge

Situated near Canyon Creek, known for its rainbow trout fishing.  A 9-mile all-terrain bicycle loop trail starts at the campground. Wildlife includes: Abert squirrel, black bear, mountain lion, elk, turkey and deer. Arizona Game & Fish Department Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery is nearby. Public is welcome.

  • FR 512 and FR 188 are unpaved roads suitable for passenger vehicles.
  • Four-wheel drive and or chains may be advisable after heavy snows.

  • The regulations for trout in Canyon Creek are upstream of OW Bridge. The limit for trout is 4.
  • From OW Bridge to the Fort Apache Reservation Boundary the regulation for trout is catch and release only.
  • Artificial fly and lure only.

  • In the winter, temperatures drop into the teens.
  • PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT.
  • Quiet hours 10:00 pm to 6:00 am (running generators are not permitted during quiet hours).

Directions:

Access #1 (40 miles east of Payson) From Payson, travel 33 miles east on paved State Hwy. 260. Turn right on unpaved Young Road/Forest Road (FR) 512, and continue for approximately 5 miles to unpaved FR 188. Turn left on FR 188 and travel 2 miles to the site.

Access #2 (22 miles north of Young) From Young, take State Hwy. 288/Forest Road (FR)512/Young Road, north for 20 miles to FR 188; turn right onto FR 188 and follow it for 2 miles to the site. View and download a map.
