The Rolls OHV Area


Area Status: Open

Located in the Mesa Ranger District about one hour from Phoenix, this 27,000 acre area has approximately 65 miles of routes that vary in width. A highlight of this area is Four Peaks Road which travels to the saddle of Four Peaks in the Mazatzal mountain range and over to State Highway 188 at Roosevelt Lake. The Rolls Area also contains a section of the Great Western Trail.  Access points to the Rolls Area include four staging areas: Four Peaks, Pobrecito, Cottonwood and Palo Fierro. Please remember to stay on the routes.  Driving off-road is prohibited on the Tonto National Forest. Currently, no permit is required for this area.

Four Peaks

  1. North on SR 87; continue approximately 15 miles past Fountain Hills to the turn-off for Four Peaks Road FR143 

  2. East on Four Peaks Road FR143, approximately 0.8 miles to the staging area 

Pobrecito

Directions:

  1. Exit Loop 202 (Red Mountain freeway) at Power Road 

  2. Continue north on Power Road, the road curves east and becomes Bush Hwy 

  3. Go straight through two stop signs, one at Coon Bluff and another at Usery Pass 

  4. Continue to pass Saguaro Lake and Butcher Jones Road; the access point is less than ½ mile past Butcher Jones Road on the right  

Cottonwood

  1. North on SR 87; continue approximately 15 miles past Fountain Hills to the turn-off for Four Peaks Road FR143 

  2. East on Four Peaks Road FR143, approximately 2 miles to the staging area, at the intersection of FR143 and FR401 

Palo Fierro

  1. North on SR 87; continue approximately 15 miles past Fountain Hills to the turn-off for Four Peaks Road FR143 

  2. East on Four Peaks Road FR143, approximately 1.4 miles to the staging area, at the intersection of FR143 and FR1832

General Notes:

This area provides access to the coves behind Saguaro Lake; four-wheel drive and high clearance is highly recommended. Only use designated routes marked with a fiberglass marker and route number. The use of user created routes is prohibited.  

There are no services provided in The Rolls with the exception of Pobrecito OHV staging area, which has one vault toilet, two ramadas with picnic tables, and a dumpster. Please remember to Pack-it-in Pack-it-out.   

Routes north of FR13 generally follow ridge tops and sand washes.  Some routes south of FR13 become steeper and rockier as they descend towards Saguaro Lake.  Expect more driving challenge on these southern routes. 

Driving Time Round Trip: 1 - 4 hours, depending on the routes you choose 

OHV Etiquette: Please remember that you share these routes with other users and that OHV courtesy and safety is your responsibility. Be aware about two-way traffic and blind corners, keep speeds low when visibility is restricted.  Use hand signals to indicate to oncoming traffic how many more vehicles in your party are behind you.

  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. 

  3. Dispose of waste properly. 

  4. Leave what you find. 

  5. Minimize campfire impacts.
