North Fork John Day Campground & Trailhead

This campground sits along the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River at the junction of the Blue Mountain and Elkhorn Scenic Byways.  It features 20 campsites, 3 accessible toilet facilities, and stock handling facilities. There is no potable water or garbage service, so please pack your garbage home. 

This campground serves as the eastern access point to North Fork John Day Wilderness via North Fork John Day River Trail #3022. The area offers hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, sight-seeing, and photography opportunities. In spring and fall you can see the salmon spawning.  Special state fishing regulations apply.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: Campground fees will be charged through November 15. The campground is not maintained but is still available throughout the winter. Access will be snowmobiles only once the road is inaccessible due to snow. Please contact the North Fork John Day Ranger District for more information.
Operational Hours: The campground is closed only by snow.  However, it is only maintained seasonally by from Memorial Day until mid-November. 
Reservations: Reservations available on recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. A limited number of sites will remain first come first served.  More information can be found in the FAQs.

Fees:
  • Single site: $8/vehicle/night (extra $5 fee per vehicle exceeding the two-vehicle-per-site allowance.) 
  • Group site:  Site 14 is $25/night (no extra vehicle charge).
An $8 reservation fee will be adding on site reserved through recreation.gov

General Information

Directions:

Horse Corrals at North Fork John Day Campground and TrailheadFrom Ukiah, OR head southeast on Forest Service Road 52 approximately 40 miles to the North Fork John Day Campground and trailhead. Parking for the trailhead is in the north end of the campground. 

Besides the 20-site campground, there is a large trailhead parking area, toilet, unloading ramp, and facilities for stock animals (corrals, mangers, hitching posts).  This site is directly adjacent to the Wild & Scenic North Fork John Day River and the Blue Mountain National Scenic Byway.

Accessibility:

This campground has 2 accessible campsites (#8 and 9) and 3 accesssible restrooms.  The stock facilities are not accessible.

There is a large trailhead parking area and overflow parking is located across from the west entrance.

River and Stream Fishing

Situated on the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River.  In spring and fall you can see the salmon spawning.  Special State fishing regulations apply.

Restricted to artificial flies and bait with a single-point hook no larger than 1/4 inch gap.
• Lures prohibited.

Day Hiking

Access to North Fork John Day River Trail #3022 and North Crane Trail #3171.  Both trails are within the North Fork John Day Wilderness.

Backpacking

Eastern portal to the North Fork John Day Wilderness via the North Fork John Day River Trail (#3022) which is 22.9 miles and finishes at the Oriental Campground.  The North Crane Trail #3171 and Crane Creek Trail # 3011 make a a loop with Trail #3022 that is a little more than 13 miles.

Horse Riding

Recreational stock handling facilities include a feeding area, 2 adjacent corrals, a loading ramp, and several hitching posts.  Stock are not allowed in main part of the campground.  The nearby trailhead is the eastern portal into the North Fork John Day Wilderness, with plenty of riding opportunities.
