Bohemia National Recreation Trail #1407

Area Status: Temporarily Closed

[PHOTO: Misty scene with Rodies in foreground and evergreens in back. Photo by Cindy Pack]Originally constructed in 1864 and 1865, the Bohemia Trail was the first organized effort for a wagon route from Oakland, Oregon to the Bohemia Mines. Most of this route was on private land and has since been abandoned and/or obliterated by road construction. However, seven miles of this historic trail through the Umpqua National Forest remains intact, traveling through old-growth forest, rocky outcrops, and the occasional open meadow.

The first 4.2-mile section of trail follows the forested Calapooya Ridge from China Saddle Trailhead on Forest Road 23 to Canton Point. The trail then continues 2.5 miles north to Shane Saddle. The original route once continued north to Bohemia City. However, roads and private mining claim activities have since obliterated this last section as well. Access to three sided Adirondack shelters at Saddle Camp and Twin Rocks, west and north of Canton Point respectively, provide a welcome place to rest along the trail.

Trail riding on this trail is for motorcycles only.

You can find detailed trail maps and descriptions in the Cottage Grove Ranger District Recreational Opportunity Guide.
