Lookout Mountain Trail travels 0.25 mile uphill pas fir and rhododendron to the top of Lookout Mountain. Trail users will be greeted with views of the Little River and North Umpqua river drainage's; on clear days, distant Cascade Mountain peaks such as Mt. Thielsen and Mt. Bailey may be visible as well. Wildflowers are abundant in June and July, with berries such as gooseberry and red-flowering currant ripening later in the summer. Wildlife sightings are common.

General Information

  • Trailhead parking does not provide a favorable opportunity for turning around vehicles pulling trailers. Other options for turning around exist nearby.
  • Parking is available for about two cars.
  • Road 800 is overgrown and narrow. Those worried about scratching their vehicle may choose to park on road 2703 and hike 0.5 mile uphill to the trail, which will be on your right.


From Roseburg, Oregon, take OR-138 east / northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. Continue until you reach milepost 43.5 and then turn right onto Forest Road 4714 (Panther Creek Road) near Apple Creek Campground. Keep to the right after crossing the bridge and follow Forest Road 4714 for 6 miles to its junction with Forest Road 4714-330 (follow paved Forest Road 4714-330 to Forest Road 2703). Turn left on Forest Road 2703 and continue for 2 miles to Forest Road 2703-800. Turn right and go 0.5 mile to the unmarked trailhead, which is just before the road goes uphill into the forest.
