The Monday Creek area of the Wayne National Forest provides some excellent opportunities for riding off-highway vehicles (OHVs). This trail system, north of Nelsonville, provides approximately 75 miles of designated trails to OHV riders, mountain bikers, and hikers. Loading ramps are available at the New Straitsville and White Oak Trailheads.

  • Trails are seasonally closed to off-highway vehicle and mountain bike use from winter to early spring. Visit our Recreation page to see seasonal open and close dates for the current year.
  • Day and night (with lights) access is permitted.
  • Open year-round for hiking.

  • Wayne National Forest OHV Trail Permit required
  • State of Ohio APV Registration required
  • No vehicles greater than 50 inches wide allowed
  • Possession of alcohol is prohibited on the Wayne National Forest per Ohio’s Open Container Law.
  • Helmets and protective eye-wear required.
  • Passengers may ride only if vehicle is designed by manufacturer to carry passengers.

In the last few years, bridges have been upgraded to concrete or steel trail bridges. Additionally, vault toilets at the trailheads have been upgraded to meet accessibility requirements. 


Directions:

This trail system has 8 trailheads. The New Straitsville Trailhead is located on SR 595, 2 mi. south of New Straitsville. To get to the Dorr Run OHV Area (5 trailheads), follow the signs at the two exits off US Hwy 33, SR 595 in Haydenville and the western Nelsonville exit to the roundabout. The Monday Creek Trailhead is on CR24 between Carbon Hill and Buchtel. The Long Ridge Trailhead is on SR 78, between Buchtel and Murray City.

This Trail system is designed primarily for off-highway vehicles and off-highway motorcycles but hikers are welcome. Loops of a variety of lengths offer hikers many different distances depending on the time they have available.

Camping is allowed at three of the five trailheads in the Dorr Run Area, at Monday Creek access and at the New Straitsville Trailhead on 595.  Please do not limit other’s use of the area with your campsite.

Fire Information You can build a campfire as long as you have a 10 foot clearance around it and put a ring around it with rocks. Fires must be extinguished before leaving camp. No bon fires are allowed. No standing or green trees may be cut. Check the bulletin boards to ensure no fire bans are in effect.

This 75 mile trail system is designed primarily for ATV/OHMs. Loops of a variety of lengths offer riders many different lengths and a variety of challenges depending on the time they have available and their skill level.
