West Ute Creek Road #648


West Ute Creek Road (Forest Road 648) is 3.48 miles long. It is open to full-sized vehicles, OHVs, motorcycles, horses, bicycles, and foot traffic. High-clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended for motorized travel. The west end of the road connects to Meadow Creek Cow Camp Road (Forest Road 821), and the east end connects to Blair Mountain Road (Forest Road 601).

General Information


From New Castle, travel north on 7th Street (which becomes Midland Ave). At the edge of town, take a slight left onto the Buford-New Castle Road (County Road 245). Follow this road north for 28 miles to Hiner Spring; along the way, you will pass the White River National Forest boundary and the West Elk Trailhead parking lot. At Hiner Spring, turn right onto Forest Road 601. To reach the east end of the road, continue on Forest Road 601 for 9.2 miles and take the right fork onto the West Ute Creek Road

To reach the west end of the road, follow Forest Road 601 for 3.5 miles east from Hiner Spring. Turn right at Forest Road 823 and follow for two miles. Turn right to stay on Forest Road 823, and continue for another 0.3 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 821 and follow for 1.3 miles, making a left turn at the intersection with Road 821.1B. After 1.3 miles, turn left onto the West Ute Creek Road.
