Western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) population data were collected in northern Arizona, USA, following two wildfires (Hochderferr Fire, Horseshoe Fire) that occurred in May and June 1996. This is a data subset consisting of 8 years of bird data collection post-wildfire (1999-2006) and 3 years of vegetation data (2002, 2005, 2006), and is part of a larger long-term data set.

Model development combining multiple data sources to leverage data source strengths and for improved parameter precision has increased, but with limited discussion on precision gain versus effort. Some data sources take more effort than others, thus knowing how much improvement is gained with these monitoring metrics is important for allocating samples on the landscape. Our framework allows research and monitoring programs to evaluate optimal use of limited funds when multiple data sources are available within the study design phase to meet study objectives.

Black‐backed woodpecker abundance in the Black Hills

The Black Hills population of black-backed woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) was petitioned, but deemed not warranted, to be listed as a threatened or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act and more information on their population size in the region is needed. Our objective was to map abundance and provide a population estimate of black-backed woodpeckers in the Black Hills and Bear Lodge Mountains of South Dakota and Wyoming, USA.

Male greater sage-grouse detectability on leks

It is unlikely all male sage-grouse are detected during lek counts, which could complicate the use of lek counts as an index to population abundance. Understanding factors that influence detection probabilities will allow managers to more accurately estimate the number of males present on leks.
