Species occurrence data from the aquatic eDNAtlas database

The eDNA samples in the eDNAtlas database describe species occurrence locations and were collected by the U.S. Forest Service and numerous agencies that have partnered with the National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation (NGC) throughout the United States. This project began in 2015, but updates will include legacy data that were collected using the same protocol. The eDNAtlas database consists of three feature classes.

Detecting spawning of threatened chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta over a large spatial extent using eDNA sampling: Opportunities and considerations for monitoring recovery

Over the last century, anthropogenic activities have caused substantial declines in the abundance of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) throughout their range in western North America. As a result, chum salmon were listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 1999. Recovery strategies have been developed, but limited baseline data on distribution impedes implementation of these strategies.

Developing tools to detect bats in soil, water, and air

Early detection of the white-nose syndrome fungus in bat hibernacula is critical for developing disease mitigation strategies; however, where bats overwinter in western North America is largely unknown. In this study, assays to detect bats from environmental samples such as sediment, water and air were designed for use as a tool to find bats on the landscape. 

Using a mycovirus to improve surveillance for the fungus causing white-nose syndrome in bats

The Rocky Mountain Research Station and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center are collaborating on a study to improve early detection of the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome (Pd) in bats by searching for  a virus. North American isolates of Pd are infected by a mycovirus, PdPV-pa. The goal of this project is to develop a sensitive assay and protocols to detect RNA from PdPV-pa, which may occur in much greater abundance than DNA from Pd in environmental samples.  

Testing environmental DNA from wolf snow tracks for species, sex, and individual identification

Monitoring elusive, relatively low-density, large predators, such as the grey wolf (Canis lupus), has often been accomplished by live-capture and radiocollaring. Increasingly, non-invasive methods are considered best practice whenever it is possible to use them.

Detection of 4 imperiled western North American freshwater mussel species from environmental DNA with multiplex qPCR assays

Four freshwater mussel species native to western North America, Gonidea angulata, Margaritifera falcata, Anodonta nuttalliana, and Anodonta oregonensis, have experienced dramatic declines over the last century and are currently threatened in many portions of their ranges. Therefore, improved tools for detecting and monitoring these species are needed.

The aquatic eDNAtlas project

Because of its advantages relative to traditional sampling techniques, environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling is being rapidly adopted to address questions about the distribution of species in streams across the United States. The eDNAtlas provides occurrence information for over 50 species from more than 12,000 samples and assists organizations in collecting more samples for specific areas and species.
