Rebuilding and new development for selected California wildfires, 1970-1999

This data publication contains detailed data on building survival and loss, as well as rebuilding and new construction, for 11 large wildfires that burned between 1970 and 1999 in California. We digitized the location of every building within the wildfire perimeter and up to 500 meters outside at multiple time steps. The 11 wildfires were located in both Northern and Southern California, spanning multiple ecological and socioeconomic zones.

The white-tailed deer is one of the most studied animals in North America, yet much of the available information has been derived in ecosystems different from the Black Hills. The Black Hills are unique in that the dominant species, ponderosa pine, has excellent regenerative abilities.

Concern over the effects of removing fire-scarred partial cross-sections may limit sampling of live ponderosa pine to reconstruct fire history. We report mortality rates for ponderosa pine trees 20 to 21 years after removing fire-scarred partial cross-sections to reconstruct fire history.

Context: In the interior Northwest, debate over restoring mixed-conifer forests after a century of fire exclusion is hampered by poor understanding of the pattern and causes of spatial variation in historical fire regimes. Objectives: To identify the roles of topography, landscape structure, and forest type in driving spatial variation in historical fire regimes in mixed-conifer forests of central Oregon.

Reconstruction of past fire regimes is a core application of dendroecology, linking fire history to population dynamics and climate effects on tree growth and survivorship.

Dr. Sean Parks earns Early Career Scientist Award

He earned his PhD from the University of Montana in May 2014.

Our understanding of how climate and fire have impacted quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) communities prior to the 20th century is fairly limited. This study analysed the period between 4500 and 2000 cal. yr BP to assess the pre-historic role of climate and fire on an aspen community during an aspen-dominated period.
