Humans live in or adjacent to wildland ecosystems that burn periodically and are part of nearly all ecosystems that are in the pyrosphere. There are many hazards posed by wildfire and certain consequences of living in these ecosystems. Most are associated with wildfire, but the increased use of prescribed fire is an issue because of associated risks with human attempts to manage ecological goals.

Trout, salmon, grayling and whitefishes (Salmonidae) are among the most ecologically and economically important fishes. They also are among the most vulnerable to global warming, and increasing drought, floods, and wildfires. In North America, salmonids occur from central Mexico northward along coastal regions and mountainous interiors to the Arctic Plains.

The Black Hills (South Dakota) flood of June 1972: Impacts and implications

Rains of 12 inches or more in 6 hours fell on the east slopes of the Black Hills the night of June 9, 1972. Resulting flash floods exacted a disastrous toll in human life and property. Rainfall and discharge so greatly exceeded previous records that recurrence intervals have been presented in terms of multiples of the estimated 50- or 100- year event. Quick runoff was produced in the heaviest rainfall areas regardless of hydrologic condition.

The human-caused Schultz Fire near Flagstaff, Arizona burned 6,100 ha (15,075 acres) on the Coconino National Forest between June 20th and 30th, 2010. Ignited by an abandoned campfire, high winds drove the fire over approximately 60% of the total area burned during the first 12 hours (U.S. Forest Service, 2010).
