Differences between Prognosis Model versions 4.0 and 5.0 are described. Additions to version 5.0 include an event monitor that schedules activities contingent on stand characteristics, a regeneration establishment model that predicts the structure of the regeneration stand following treatment, and a COVER model that predicts shrub development and total canopy cover.

Long-term precommercial thinning effects on Larix occidentalis (western larch) tree and stand characteristics

Precommercial thinning (PCT) is used to increase tree size and shorten harvest rotation time. Short-term results from PCT studies often show a trade-off between individual-tree growth and net stand yield, while longer-term effects of PCT on tree growth and stand yield are less well documented.

The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a computer program that projects the development of forest stands in the United States and British Columbia, Canada. The proceedings of the second FVS conference, held in Fort Collins, CO, includes 34 papers dealing with applications of FVS that range from the stand-level through full-scale landscape analyses.

User's Guide to the Stand Prognosis Model

The Stand Prognosis Model is a computer program that projects the development of forest stands in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Thinning options allow for simulation of a variety of management strategies. Input consists of a stand inventory, including sample tree records, and a set of option selection instructions. Output includes data normally found in stand, stock, and yield tables and details on selected sample trees.

Drought leaves a lasting impression on trees

​The availability of water is the most important factor affecting year-to-year variation in tree growth in most forest ecosystems. Some effects of drought, such as tree mortality, are obvious, but relatively little is known about non-lethal impacts. This study showed that drought impacts linger beyond the end of dry periods. Understanding this phenomenon is important to anyone who is interested in projecting future biomass of a forest or the rate of carbon sequestration, because accounting for it in projection models will bring the models closer to making realistic projections.

Dendroecological studies in the Interior West states

Tree-ring studies are used for a wide variety of purposes, including the reconstruction of past climate. In 2009, the Interior West Forest Inventory and Analysis program started a project to inventory and archive approximately 11,000 increment cores collected in most of the Interior West states during periodic inventories of the 1980s and 1990s.

Presettlement ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir forests of the Colorado Front Range were open and heterogeneous. Logging, grazing, and fire suppression over past 100 to150 years have altered stand structure by changing diameter distributions and increasing overstory density.
